Bonnaroo 2010

Hello!  I’ve made it home safely from my first ever Bonnaroo in Manchester TN and I had a great time!  My recordings will take some time to process and organize, but here is a list of what I was able to capture:

- Manchester Orchestra
- Needtobreathe
- Blitzen Trapper  mp3
- Nas and Damian Marley  mp3
- OK Go (first song and a half are missing)
- Les Claypool  mp3
- Flaming Lips  Set 1 mp3 - Set 2 mp3
- Circa Survive  mp3
- Weezer  mp3
- Jay-Z  mp3
- Regina Spektor
- Dave Matthews Band

Just keep checking back periodically, I’ll have these uploaded as soon as possible!

EDIT: Alrighty folks I’ve started uploading the shows!  Most of you will be interested in the mp3’s alone (v2 mp3s, zipped and uploaded to megadownload), but if there are any audiophiles reading, I will likely be uploading the flac’s onto either archive.org or dimeadozen.org .  If you think you will be interested in the flac’s, you may want to start trying to get an account now on dime, because most of these bands don’t allow their music to be shared on archive.

See ya, enjoy!

Blues Traveler 05/19/2010

A fellow taper reached out to me on the taping message boards and knowing that I am a big fan of Blues Traveler, asked me if I would be interested in attending and taping a private concert that the band was performing at the Eastern Market in Washington DC for the Everglades Society.  I enthusiastically accepted his request, and we were also able to get another taper in the door.  Tickets to this event were not sold, and the public was not invited, so I felt very cool indeed.

Granted this “venue” is absolutely horrible for live music, but even with that said, I still feel like I did a very decent job with the recording.  The details of how the tape was made are outline in the notes section of the website it is listed on, which I am linking to at the end of this post.  If you enjoy Blues Traveler, please be sure to check them out at one of their upcoming shows: Belmont Country Club @ Loudoun Music Fest, Ashburn VA, Sun, June 27 - ~ $17 or Celebrate Virginia! @ Fredricksburg VA, Fri, July 30 - $15adv, $20dos.

Below is the tracklisting, and then a the stream of the recording.  Enjoy!

Daycare Swindlers, 03/18/2010

Daycare Swindlers, 3/18/2010

Every time I see this band I wish that they played longer sets and played more often.  This time I was treated to a slightly longer than average set (just over an hour), and I enjoyed the hell out of it.  In spite of the drunken gals who kept manhandling the CA-14’s I was running at hip-height on the stage lip (ultimately causing me to move the mic’s, mid-set), and in spite of the mosher who, upon having been identified as rowdy by the bouncer, proceeded to whip the security guard’s ass, and perhaps in part because of the latter, I thoroughly enjoyed the show.  For the first time in over ten years of taping I received recognition from the band performing while they were on stage, and they dedicated “Lifeless Corpses” to me, Brian, who “has been taping some of these shows and putting them on the interweb, so you fire that thing up and watch it go.”

I wasn’t able to pull a soundboard feed, but for most of the show I have mixed the sources from two pairs of microphones that I was running (BSC1-K3’s > PS2 > CA-9100 > R-09HR in ORTF and CA-14’s > CA-UGLY > iRiver h120).  As I said, I was worrying about my CA-14’s and about 30min into the set I moved the whole rig, and there is about 10mins of single signal as a result, but I did some crafty fading in post production and it shouldn’t mess up the listenability too much for you.

Unfortunately the band is not on archive.org (though I’m sure they wouldn’t mind being on there—- maybe I should ask them to send in their permission….), but I have the audio recording available for interested parties.

North Miss. Allstars, 02/27/2010

North Mississippi Allstars, State Theater 02/27/2010

Two and a half hours of virtually non-stop blues rock.   Say what you will about a lot of these jammier bands, but you really won’t have much negative to say about staying on stage for over two hours before taking a short two minute break and killing a four song, 20+ min encore.  North Mississippi Allstars is a brief threepiece from Hernando, Mississippi and headed by Luther Dickinson on vocals and guitar, who is also the lead guitarist for The Black Crowes.  I’m always a bit confused by these jammy bands; I don’t quite get it all.  Nonetheless, I was delighted to attend and I met up with abut a half dozen other area tapers.  North Mississippi Allstars were kind enough to save me the $30 by getting me on the guestlist too, so that sort of thing helps quite a bit.

Check out the recording that I made, and if you like it, please head over to the band’s official MySpace page to listen to some official studio recordings.  If you still like what you hear, please consider giving your money to them somehow (buying songs on iTunes, buying a CD / shirt, etc).  Good bands deserve good support. =)

Two concerts so far this year, a few coming up

Yarn, and my BSC1's, in Haymarket VA, Jan 21 2010

The year has gotten off to a slow start— the heavy snowfalls that blanketed the DC region are melting slowly and signs of life have started trickling back onto the calendars of the area venues.  This year I am going to be test running this blog and operating it alongside my MySpace’s “DC Area Concerts Blog”, which will undoubtedly mean more work for a while, but hopefully given enough readership and interested here, I wil be able to fully ween myself off of updating the MySpace one and instead keep this place the focal point for my hobby.

You’ll find that the left margin of the screen lists upcoming area shows.  It should all be pretty self explanatory, the only thing worth noting is that since I will personally be using this blog as a means by which to keep myself and my calendar organized, I may be including some “away” gigs that I’m considering; these are italicized for easy recognition.

I will likely be posting reviews of shows, set lists, pictures, and even audio from the concerts I attend and record.  So far I am guestlisted for North Mississippi Allstars this Saturday at the State Theater in Falls Church, then hip-hop act, P.O.S. in DC on March 6, and Disco Biscuits at the 930 on 4/20.  I’ve also bought tickets to both Coheed and Cambria shows at the 930 Club in May, as well as to see The Thermals up in B-more in mid-April.  I’ll likely hit a Jónsi show, either in Philly or NY, and it’s also looking like I may make that trek to Philly for Manchester Orchestra.

To kick things off for now however, I’ll catch you up by posting the two shows that I attended so far this year:
